Probably from Tijuana, Mexico, in the 1920s or 1930s. Tequila and the Margarita didn't really become popular in the US until the 1970s.
2 ounce tequila

Ingredient: tequila

What it is:  Agave

Blue Agave-based spirit made primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, Mexico.

1 ounce Triple sec

Ingredient: Triple sec

What it is:  Liqueur
An orange-flavored liqueur made from the dried peel of oranges from the Caribbean. Its name means triple distilled.

3/4 to 1 ounce lime

Ingredient: lime

What it is:  Fruit

A number of different fruits (generally citruses), both species and hybrids, which have their origin in the Himalayan region of India, and which are typically round, green to yellow in color, 3–6 cm in diameter, generally containing sour and acidic pulp.
